Curriculum

We encourage and promote play, exploration, socialization, and skill and concept development in a variety of interesting ways. It is a fun way for children to be creative and learn at the same time. Free play time is an important part of our daily schedule. During this time, children learn how to interact with others and learn about themselves. They also practice skills that prepare them for school such as sharing and turn taking with the guidance and help of staff if needed.

Our daily schedule allows for both planned and unplanned opportunities for learning. Planned learning activities are usually done in small groups so that children can get the help or individual attention they need. Unplanned learning happens through daily interactions and spontaneous moments that occur with teachers and friends as they play and explore. Our daily schedule allows children to get know what is to be expected in their day because we follow a sequence of events. However, our schedule does allow us to be flexible to meet the needs of the group if more time is needed during a planned or spontaneous activity time.

We use a theme-based approach to plan activities and play areas. Each week we introduce a theme topic we think will be interesting to the children such as community helpers or dinosaurs. However, we also plan topics based on the children’s interests, as well as a reflection of our families and the community we live in, such as the themes like farming, gardening and outdoor safety.

When arriving at nursery school, children are greeted at the door and are welcomed into our bright and cheerful classrooms. Our classrooms are set up to be inviting so children will want to explore, learn and have fun. For example, puzzles develop fine motor skills, books develop language skills, hands on science tables develop cognitive skills, open ended art tables develop creativity and dramatic play areas develop social skills. Toys and equipment in the play areas are rotated and changed up in accordance with the theme topic we are currently exploring but also with children’s interests. For example, dinosaurs’ books, pictures and toy dinosaurs were all put in the science area during our dinosaur theme but we noticed the children were really fascinated by the concept of animals being hatched from eggs, so we added reptiles, turtles and other animals that hatch. We also expose children to similarities and differences through interactions and by the environment we set up for children to play in. For example in our dramatic play area we have a variety of play foods that children can explore. Our library area also has an assortment of books that expose children to different cultures.

Each day children are encouraged to participate in circle time, art, music, and story time which are all planned around our themes. At circle time children develop and learn social, language and communication skills. They also learn number and letter recognition through activities such as finger-plays and songs that include counting. At art time, they develop creativity, sensory and fine motor skills which also provide the practice needed for printing. Independence is encouraged however staff are always there to help guide children at their own individual level with words of encouragement and praise.

Parents are informed of their children’s learning and development through bi-monthly newsletters, parent bulletin boards as well as daily conversations with staff. Communication is important and encouraged. Parents are always welcome to call the school anytime. Teachers also promote open communication by making phone calls home in the month of November. These calls are to help build on relationships between staff and families as well to answer any question/concerns parents may have.

Through our interactions with children and the planning of our play environment and activities, we enhance each child’s life as they walk through our door daily. We also hope that we can make their first school experience a happy and memorable one with memories that can be added to their foundations, as they continue on their road in life.
